PORCELAIN CROWNS

Large old filling? Root canal tooth that feels fragile? A tooth that’s discolored or still sore after biting an olive pit? When a veneer isn’t the right fit, a porcelain dental crown at Pembroke Square Dental can restore strength, comfort, and a natural look.

What is a porcelain crown?

A porcelain crown is a custom, full-coverage “cap” that fits over your tooth, providing 360° protection. Today’s ceramics (porcelain and zirconia) are incredibly strong and lifelike, so your crown blends seamlessly with your smile while reinforcing the tooth for everyday chewing.

What does a crown do?

  • Reinforces weakened teeth (large/failing fillings, cracks, or after a root canal)
  • Restores lost tooth structure from grinding or fractures
  • Improves shape and color for a natural-looking result
  • Relieves discomfort from cracks and worn enamel

Who is a good candidate?

You may benefit from a crown if you have a cracked tooth, very large filling, root-canal treated tooth, severe wear, or deep discoloration where a veneer or filling isn’t ideal. We’ll confirm the best option after a comprehensive exam

First appointment: preparation + temporary

  • We’ll numb the area to keep you comfortable and prepare the tooth conservatively.
  • A digital scan or impression is taken so our lab can craft your custom crown for an exact fit and shade.
  • A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and gums.
Tips while wearing your temporary: avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side; if it comes off, try to place it back and call us so we can secure it. The temporary prevents sensitivity and keeps the gumline healthy for your final crown.

Second appointment: try-in + cementation

  • We remove the temporary and try in the porcelain crown, checking fit, bite, and shade.
  • A radiograph (X-ray) may be taken to verify the margins.
  • The crown is bonded with dental cement and polished; we’ll review home-care instructions so it lasts.

Timing: The first visit typically takes 60–90 minutes; the second is about 30–60 minutes. Exact timing depends on your case and lab turnaround.

Frequently Asked Questions

With good care, many last 5–15 years or more.

Yes crowns protect the tooth but the edges still need daily brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings.

Not always. We recommend a crown when >50% of the tooth is compromised or it’s structurally weak even without a root canal.

Yes. Avoid chewing while numb and skip very sticky foods for the first 24 hours after cementation.

No, proper technique won’t loosen it. Slide the floss out sideways around a new temporary; normal flossing is fine once the final crown is placed.

A well-fitted crown should feel snug. If you notice consistent trapping, let us know—we can adjust the bite or contact.

Yes. Porcelain or zirconia crowns are color-matched for front teeth to look natural.

Absolutely, if the underlying tooth is healthy, we can replace a chipped, cracked, or leaking crown.

We use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Some short-term tenderness is normal after the appointment.
